Netherlands’ NBC Congrescentrum upgrades with L-Acoustics K Series
Following a devastating fire in 2022, the NBC Congrescentrum in Nieuwegein, the Netherlands, has emerged from its ashes not just rebuilt but technologically transformed. The event venue, which evolved from a modest meeting space in 1992 to hosting up to 4,000 guests today, now features an L-Acoustics K Series sound system with a design innovation.
L-Acoustics Certified Partner AudioBizz collaborated with René Doeser, project leader for the NBC from Dutch system integrator Avex. “We created a unique design where two large event halls can function independently or combine into one cohesive space”, explains Edwin Lam of Avex, who worked with AudioBizz to engineer the system using L-Acoustics Soundvision software. “When the dividing wall is removed, four carefully positioned line arrays work together as a unified sound solution.”
The system features identical configurations in Event Halls 1 and 2. Each space includes left/right arrays composed of six Kara IIi line arrays, complemented by three KS21i subwoofers flown center stage. For front-fill, three 5XT speakers are positioned along the vertical stage edge, while two X8 speakers on the stage floor provide stage monitoring.
The entire system is driven by LA12X, LA4X and LA2Xi amplifiers. “The Kara IIi offers industry-leading sound pressure levels relative to its weight”, says Nico Smidt, Sales Director at AudioBizz. “This makes it ideal for NBC Congrescentrum, where both speech intelligibility and musical clarity are essential across diverse event types. The system’s flexible mounting options allowed us to integrate it discreetly within the venue’s architectural framework.”
The project has garnered international recognition, with Avex winning an award in the Venues & Event Space category at the InAVation Awards 2025 in Barcelona. The venue’s audio evolution continues, with plans to enhance Event Halls 1 and 2 with four additional KS28 subwoofers and LA12X amplification for increased low-frequency response. The third space, the Grand Hall, is scheduled for an upgrade incorporating another Kara IIi system to complement existing L-Acoustics amplifiers.
