Black Lion Audio introduces Auteur 8DAT

The new Auteur 8DAT from Black Lion Audio combines an eight-channel mic preamp with an ultra-stable word clock and an 8-channel ADAT expander, to add the weight and color of Auteur preamps to any ADAT-equipped recording hardware.

With Cinemag transformer-coupled analog circuits and patented Macro-MMC clocking technology, Auteur 8DAT enables recording in two rack spaces, delivering eight channels of the Auteur design in a single unit to track multiple sources simultaneously while giving each channel the right amount of desired preamp color.

Auteur preamps’ hybrid design features a transparent IC-based front-end and Cinemag output transformers that add weight and color when pushed. The result is a preamp capable of delivering modern transient response at conservative gain levels while offering the warmth and saturation associated with classic British designs when driven.

Auteur 8DAT is designed to integrate seamlessly into modern hybrid studios. Users can route signals through analog XLR outputs to a console or use built-in ADAT connectivity to add eight channels of preamps directly to their existing audio interface. Each channel includes independent phantom power, polarity reverse, and a -10 dB pad, along with front-panel 1/4-inch inputs switchable between DI and line-level operation.

For outboard processing, the unit also features eight insert points via DB25 connectors. These inserts can be switched directly from the front panel to A/B external processing when monitoring through the ADAT outputs. The sends can also function as mults, enabling parallel processing chains or mid-side workflows.

Auteur 8DAT doubles as a word clock capable of synchronizing an entire recording rig. Its Macro-MMC technology ensures ultra-stable synchronization and low jitter, helping preserve transient clarity and stereo imaging. Engineers can clock their whole system from the Auteur 8DAT via BNC connections or sync the unit to an external clock if desired.

Black Lion Audio has equipped the Auteur 8DAT with Vishay, Wima, and Nichicon capacitors, thin-film resistors, and optimized gain staging ensure low noise and high signal integrity. The converters are derived from the company’s Revolution interfaces, delivering digital capture at sample rates up to 192 kHz. Built to withstand both studio and live environments, the Auteur 8DAT features a rugged chassis with a black-anodized aluminum faceplate.
